The Design Stage:
- scale drawing in full colour, computer design
- any construction detail as required

- Self Sufficiency Courses
-
If you are fed up adding to the profits of the multi-national supermarket chains, why not opt out and become more self-sufficient ?
Contrary to the general opinion that you must have acres of land, you can grow your own salad leaves, even on the balcony of an apartment. And you don't have to turn your whole back garden into a pig sty like Tom & Barbara in the Good Life (unless you want to !). It is still possible to have a good area of garden for your family to enjoy whilst still being able to create an area to grow your own for most of the year.

- St Colmans Grammar School, Newry

"Following major refurbishment of the grounds and construction of new classrooms, we were left with a dilemma. The quad which had been paved 20 years ago now looked shabby compared with the pristine new areas of the college. We realised that we would like it to be transformed before the official opening night of the new classroom blocks. Despite the last minute rush, Vanessa Drew was able to visit the site, measure and specify plants and paving. Vanessa was also able to recommend a paving contractor who pulled out all the stops and did a fantastic job in such a short space of time. The planting was also tired and unsuitable for the area, so Vanessa recommended new plants to ensure year-round colour and interest. These have now been planted and the transformation is superb. It is now easy on the eye, and more importantly, easier to maintain." Father Brown, St Colmans College.

Vanessa says: The trees were all surrounded by mortar with cobbles pressed into the surface. Over time, the roots had pushed up and broken the mortar. Dirt and leaves also catches between the cobbles. We re-surfaced the area with a feature circle of paving brick set in sand, and gravel around the trunk of the tree.
The paving was plain grey flags. Whilst they were still functional and in fairly good condition, we used Tegula Heather brick from Tobermore with a Golden Tegula trim to add warmth and colour to the quad area.
There is also a pond which had become overgrown. The excess vegetation was removed and the water was replaced. Fish have now been added and a filter central fountain should help to keep the water clear.

- Rural Site
- This is one of our latest projects.
This is one of our latest projects. The site is currently very rural and untouched. We intend to plant more native trees & wildflowers to maintain and encourage wildlife. Hopefully the 'after' pictures will look as natural as the 'before' pictures.

DrivewayWe have designed the layout of the driveway so that it disappears from view. This creates an image of mystery. There will be dense planting of native trees and shrubs to encourage further wildlife and screen the house and driveway from the surrounding countryside. This will reduce the visual impact of the new build and help it to sit more comfortably in its rural surroundings.
TreesWe are only cutting down trees if really necessary. Unfortunately this one had seeded itself in the middle of the new driveway. However, we ensure that trees are cut when birds are not nesting to minimise disturbance. We also plan to plant almost 50 mature new trees and about 100 metres of native evergreen hedging very soon. It will be lovely to see the birds using our new trees for nesting next spring.

- Ulster Tatler Interiors Magazine - Island Magee
- From the Islandmagee House feature in the Ulster Tatler
"When I first met my clients Shirley and David at their beautiful new home, I knew this project would turn out to be very impressive", says Vanessa Drew, who designed the garden for the Islandmagee house. "They have a generously sized garden, as can be the case when a house is situated on a corner site. This enables the house to sit comfortably in its surroundings. Careful use of planting softened the approach to the house without hiding it from view".

"A garden structure, if thoughtfully positioned, becomes an extra room. As with conservatories, a gazebo or summer house must be positioned somewhere it will be used often. For example, if a conservatory is built on to a rarely-used room, it may tend to be forgotten.
"A garden must have an air of mystery. This can be achieved, however small the site. If you can see the whole garden from the kitchen window, why bother to leave the house? A winding path disappearing from view will entice visitors to discover what lies beyond. A gazebo positioned at the end of this path will serve as a secret, tranquil hideaway.
"If you would like to transform your garden, regardless of its size, why not give us a call and see what we can do for you."

- BBC TV Greenmount Garden Programme
-
I was delighted to be given the task of designing and constructing the Friends Community Garden in Cushendall, on behalf of the BBC's Greenmount Garden television programme. Assisted by local residents, the project took shape over a few weeks, culminating in 3 days final filming for the programme.

This is what the site looked like before we started. The design has been drawn up in accordance to the requirements of the "Friends" group in Cushendall.
It is envisaged that the garden will be used by local residents including people with physical and learning disabilities. With this in mind, the garden will be accessible to wheelchair users.
The planting has been planned to include lots of scent, texture, colour and general year-round interest.
The paving and walling were very generously supplied by Tobermore lifestyle products.
We shall add more photos and information as the project continues. Please contact us if you have any further suggestions or comments, or if you have a project which you think needs some attention.
